The capital city of Hunan province is the Changsha city which covers an area about 11.8 thousand square kilometers, with a population of 7 million inhabitants. The Changsha city can be dated back to the Spring and Autumn period. It has more than 4000 years history. In the Tang dynasty, it was developed into the highest point and into the blooming period. After the foundation of the People’s Republic of China, Changsha became an important interior port and a commercial and industrial city. It has been listed into one of the historical and cultural cities of China because of its long history and dense culture. It attracted seas of tourists both from home and abroad each year. Nowadays, it has 6 districts, 2 counties and 1 city subordinated to the Changsha city.

Yuelu Academy

Yuelu Academy, one of the famous four academies in ancient China, is situated at the foot of Yuelu mountain. It was built in the year of 976AD, in the Song dynasty, 233 years older than Cambridge University and 660 years older than Harvard University. It still accepts the graduates and is protected at the state level.

 

Orange Islet

In the center of the Xiang river, there is a long islet named Orange Peninsula. The name literally means that the islet riches orange. And the scenic spots of Yuelu mountain and Orange Peninsula were listed into 5A scenic area. The Orange Peninsula became famous not only because of the abundant orange, but the poem about the Peninsula. The poem was written by the Chairman Mao in 1925. Although in that period he did not become the leader of China, while his poem revealed his ambition of being a leader and encouraged the Chinese people to fight for freedom. Until now this poem and Chairman Mao have always been alive in people’s mind.

 

Provincial Museum

In the museum, the Mawangdui Han Tomb is an another historical site regarded as the witness of ancient Changsha city. You will not believe your eyes when you see the well preserved female corpse buried deeply under the ground. In 1970s, the tomb was revealed. Weapons, artifacts, bamboo scripts and vessels were found there, which contributed a lot to the researches on the Changsha’s history. Archaeologists also found many silk objects under the tomb. As you know, China is the hometown of silk, while these silk objects prove that China has possessed mature silk weaving skills and is famous for its silk handicrafts.
